Sometimes the volume in our minds could use some turning down, a way to de-clutter in order to amplify the good stuff: our creativity, our passions, our ingenuity.

When we think about the seasons in New England we often have favorites, but sometimes a place can conjure an elemental detail – sunlight, colors, temperature, smells – leaving us with a special memory that we associate with a particular season.

We had the opportunity to enjoy a rainy, January weekend at Inn by the Sea, just outside of Portland, Maine. If you could be anywhere during a rainstorm in the winter, Maine might not be the first place that pops into your head, but that’s part of what makes this place so special. It is a haven, a secret hideout, an inspiration – just what we needed for some relaxation and constructive planning for Literary Traveler’s next initiatives.

Cooking, like writing, is not just an artistic process but an act that bears responsibility.

Stepping inside, we were instantly warmed and welcomed by the staff. When it was time to go to our rooms and dry off, it was a pleasant surprise to arrive at such a spacious destination. Our room was split into two levels so we had plenty of space to unwind or work when we felt bursts of inspiration. And the bathroom is worth mentioning: there is something about a big, clean, luxurious bathroom that makes you feel taken care of. It truly was a home away from home.

Another thing that makes IL1230469nn by the Sea so inspiring is the food. It’s artistic, scientific, and environmentally conscious. The chef at the fabulous onsite Sea Glass restaurant has partnered with local farms, fisherman, and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute to serve delicious food while participating in the effort to conserve life in the Maine waters and support local sustainable farming. Cooking, like writing, is not just an artistic process but an act that bears responsibility. It was refreshing to see a place that takes that responsibility seriously and proudly. Every meal we had was savory, and dinner was an experience we happily prolonged with drinks by the fire. Breakfast, on the second morning, was something we couldn’t wait for after tasting it on the first; it was pancakes, eggs, and hash, enjoyed while gazing at the beautiful and raw Crescent Beach from a distance.

It is just the right setting for all the good in your mind to make its grand appearance.

Sometimes the volume in our L1230523minds could use some turning down, a way to de-clutter in order to amplify the good stuff: our creativity, our passions, our ingenuity. So we visited the spa. The spa at Inn by the Sea has a large menu of relaxing treatments and therapies. It was difficult to decide on just one, so we ended up picking two, enjoying one of their signature treatments and a foot massage. They offer romantic retreats and packages, as well for a more intimate experience of traveling with your significant other. And if your significant other is your dog, you can bring him/her too! Pets are welcome in one of their pet-friendly rooms. Services available include grooming, pet massages, gourmet pet menus, and doggie day care.

January rainstorms might always make me think of Inn by the Sea now: our warm and cozy shelter from the storm. But staying there could provide that special solace any time of year. It is just the right setting for all the good in your mind to make its grand appearance.
